In 2014, it is estimated that over 1.5 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed and over 500,000 people will be lost to this disease. Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the United States. Breast cancer alone will claim the lives of 40,000 women in America this year. Odds are good that everyone reading this has been impacted by this deadly, destructive disease, either personally or through a family member or loved one being diagnosed, and those of us at Nekdoodle share in that loss. Our broken hearts have found a safe place in the survivor community. If you have been affected by cancer in some way, you can find strength, solidarity, and healing through programs like American Cancer Society walks and the Relay for Life.
Relay for Life marks one of the single best ways to get involved with fundraising for the American Cancer Society. The Relay for Life is often a multi-day event that takes place outdoors on or near a walking course with events taking place both during the day and night. The Relay is a community-based event that can be held anywhere in a community that wants to support funding the American Cancer Society. Over 5,000 different Relay for Life events take place across the United States and in other countries. The Relay for Life raises over $400 million each year, and these funds are used for cancer research, support services for patients and families, and even for promoting further American Cancer Society events. It is estimated that the Relay for Life events have raised almost $5 billion since they began. Our fight and our hope for a cure must continue. Events like the Relay for Life and organizations like the American Cancer Society are so important, because they bring individuals and communities together to heal, cope, and raise funds for future progress in this war against cancer. The Relay for Life is important because it allows an entire community to band together to declare that fighting cancer and helping individuals and families heal is of real importance to the community members. Getting involved with The American Cancer Society helps to provide funding to medical centers and doctors who are researching new life-saving and cancer treatment methods as well as lobbying for cancer-friendly policy among lawmakers. Each one of us can make a difference, we just have to make one move in the right direction.
